The day was 31st Dec, 2017 when we (me & Jo) were picked up from our hotel in Bali in Legian to be transferred to the Padang Bai harbour to embark on a 90 minute ferry ride to the Gili Islands. Torrential rains dampened our spirits a little early in the morning, however by the time we arrived at the port a good 2 hours later it was bright and sunny.
After checking in at the harbour to collect the boat stickers with an open return, we boarded the ferry service provided by Wahana Fast Boat.
A wonderful and brisk ride later, we arrived at the beautiful Gili Trawangan harbour. The first look of upon disembarking was of shock as there were throngs of people on the streets as well as the beach.
It felt like I was in Calangute Beach in Goa on New Years Eve. However, as we headed towards our accommodation which was about 750 metres from the harbour, the scene changed from crowded and noisy to serene and sparse crowd.
With clear blue skies up above as well as below, Gili Trawangan felt like a paradise. With no motor vehicles around it was quite relaxing as only bicycles and horse carts can be found as modes of transport on the island.
A great place to relax as well as explore Gili Trawangan has something for everyone.
With crystal clear waters and beautiful marine life its quite difficult to stay away from the waters while the sun shines brightly up above.
The harbour side of the island is where all the action is whereas the other side of the island is a distinct contrast.
A few spots that I would recommend to visit during a trip to Gili Trawangan are –
Sama Sama – A raggae bar with its very distinct and laid back attitude is perfect for an evening. With live reggae music everyday, Sama Sama is quite popular amongst all ages.
Ziggy Bar – With a very upbeat vibe and blazing music, it is difficult to miss this spot. Great music and cheap drinks was the reason why we welcomed the new year here.
Sand Bar – One of the most busy spots in Gili Trawangan for sure due to its amazing ambience and great music. With a huge space (comparatively) and a dance floor, it is one of the best clubs to dance the night away on this tiny piece of heaven.
The Irish Pub House- Just like its name suggests, The Irish Pub House delivers as its namesake. Great drinks, amazing ambience by the beach and friendly staff makes it an ideal spot to get started for an evening of fun.
Well the stay in Gili Trawangan was for sure a memorable experience and leaving this paradise was quite heartbreaking but looking forward to the spectacular world of Lombok.
Until then cherio!!
